Beck the odd man out

Doing what was overwhelmingly expected, Joachim Loew dropped Hoffenheim right-back Andreas Beck from his final 23 for the World Cup which begins in just more than a week. That, allied with the decision to not call up a replacement for Heiko Westermann, means that Germany’s touring party will have 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 6 strikers and 6 midfielders.

The worry is the last number, especially since Loew’s prefferred 4231 formation will require the deployment of five midfielders in the side at any given time.  Loew will defend himself on the issue by stating that the outside positions of the midfield will be occupied by Lukas Podolski and/or Cacau/Kiessling. He will also defend the lack of central midfielders in the squad by stating that Denis Aogo can play in central midfield in required, and as a major emergency Philip Lahm can also step into that role.

But the fact that Loew is betting so much in the versetality of his players (more on that soon) rears questions as to whether or not it would be sub-optimal to play so many players out of their natural positions. Denis Aogo and Philip Lahm have in total played one and a half games for Germany at defensive midfield. While Lahm was superb in his debut in that position against England at Wembley, Aogo was less than assured against Hungary in the recent friendly.

Also to consider is the fact that if indeed Lahm is moved out of one of the wing-back positions (possibly right-back) who would fit into his role? Jerome Boateng’s auditon for right back against high-quality opposition i.e, Russia turned into a debut sending-off, and he was patchy even against Hungary, being caught out of position one too many times. At left-back Aogo is inexperienced, and Jansen has shown his vulnerability as a full-back, preferring a more advanced role.

This turn of events now means that Germany will have to hope and pray that both of Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger remain fit and on form throughout the tournament.
